Course Objectives:
The students will acquire and learn :
- The fundamentals of signals & linear time invariant systems used in communication systems.
- Fourier representations and the analysis of the signals in time and frequency domain.
- Linear filters: Low pass, High pass and Band pass filters.
- In depth knowledge of different types of analog communication systems and different modulation techniques(Amplitude Modulation, Frequency and Phase Modulation).
- Demodulation techniques : SSB Demodulation, FM Demodulation.
COURSE CONTENTS
Unit 0 : Mathematical Review: Complex numbers, Exponential function, trigonometric functions, Integrals and derivatives.
Unit 1: Introduction to communication and Signals: Basic terminology of communication, types of signals, signals classification, one sided and two sided spectrum, Fourier series, Parserval’s theorem.
Unit 2: Fourier Transform and LTI systems: Properties of Fourier transform, Dirac impulse function, unit step and signum functions, Bandlimited signals and the sampling theorem, Linear time invariant systems, Convolution, Signal transmission through LTI systems, causal systems, bandpass signals and Hilbert transform, filtering bandpass signals.
Unit 3: Introduction to Modulation: Distortionless Communication, Harmonic distortion, Classification of modulation systems, Analog CW modulation, Amplitude Modulation (AM), power computation, AM production, Single Sideband Modulation (SSB), SSB Demodulation, Advantages and disadvantages of SSB, Vestigial Sideband (VSB)
Unit 4: Frequency and Phase Modulation: Exponential modulation, Frequency and Phase Modulation (FM & PM), Narrowband phase and frequency modulation, Sinusoidal modulation, Filtering the FM signal, FM through nonlinear system, FM Generation, FM Demodulation
